Duke University Biomedical Engineering
The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Duke University is one of the oldest and largest biomedical engineering programs in the country and was home to the first accredited undergraduate BME program in the United States. Today, Duke BME comprises more than 50 faculty and over 750 students across its undergraduate and graduate programs. In FY2025, Duke BME had approximately $50 million in research expenditures. Duke BME consistently ranks among the top biomedical engineering programs in the nation. For more than 50 years, Duke BME faculty have pioneered major areas of biomedical engineering, including cardiac electrophysiology, biomaterials, medical ultrasound and biomedical imaging, while establishing emerging strengths in neural engineering, computational and data-driven medicine, genomics, synthetic biology, and tissue engineering. Duke BME faculty have taken leadership roles in major professional societies, authored leading textbooks in the field, and translated their research into widely used biomedical technologies and dozens of startup companies. The department’s close integration with Duke University School of Medicine and Duke Health provides a particularly strong environment for interdisciplinary and translational biomedical engineering research. Duke BME graduates have become leaders across academia, medicine, and the biomedical engineering industry.
