Ultrasound Commercialization and Translation Summit

This year, IUS is proposing a Commercialization and Translation Summit on the last day of the conference. The summit is an opportunity for attendees to learn about the ways IUS community members have taken research ideas from their laboratory and developed the commercial potential of that research. This Summit will explore success stories of researchers translating their research, discuss perspectives and approaches employed by small and large businesses in translating technologies, and engage in workshops to strengthen skills in various forms of translation and commercialization.

Workshop: An Introduction to Entrepreneurship for Ultrasound Researchers

William ("Bill") Walker - Abstract

In this interactive workshop, you will have the opportunity to learn from an experienced serial entrepreneur with over 35 years as an inventor, product architect, and entrepreneur. You will be guided through a set of core questions that define the path to impact, whether you are creating an invention, a product, or a venture. Key elements of customer discovery (who will buy this and why), market sizing (how much money is at stake), competitive analysis (what is the competition), intellectual property (how will we protect it), and sales (how will we get it to customers) will be introduced. Every element of this workshop will be presented in the language of engineers and scientists, not MBAs. The importance of these topics will be illustrated by personal experience in the roles of inventor, serial startup founder, and a corporate director. You will use a combination of internet searches and AI to answer the core questions for your own innovation. This workshop will provide a foundational understanding what it takes to create an impactful invention, product, or venture.
